This is a very melodic riff in the key of A minor.  Notice that it lingers very briefly on
the 4th  (note of the scale) which is D.  This will create a slightly suspended feel
before moving on to resolve on the root (note of the scale), A.  This type of phrase is
great for playing over a progression with a moderate tempo.  Naturally, since it
resolves to the key tone (A), it will work exceptionally well over the I chord (Am).
However, it will blend nicely over either the IV (Dm)or VI (F) chords as they both
contain an (A) note which, as I stated earlier is the note on which the phrase
resolves (ends).

Also note that this phrase is very linear in that it flows along the scale without much
note skipping.  This is particularly important for beginners to note as it exemplifies
the idea of  melody.  This riff is very “singable”.  That is an idea you want to keep in
the back of your mind as you improvise leads.

Enjoy!
