Drills are essential to building any form of skill in a reasonable amount
of time. Every skill based hobby and profession requires practice and
repetition. Drills isolate specific movements and combinations of
movements which greatly accelerate the process of building skill. So,
when your teacher tells you to do drills, do them! They are the closest
thing to a shortcut that actually works.
